We wrapped up Sarah's Key with some very invigorating discussion. Always interesting to discuss the holocaust.
Onward to our next read. This one is The Help by Kathryn Stockett which many people have read. I could not get a kit for it, but a few people own the book and have offered to lend it. Let me know if you need one and I will help you find one.
The fun and frivolity will take place at my house on Wednesday September 8th at 7:00 pm.
The Help
Be prepared to meet three unforgettable women:
Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.
Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.
Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t mind her tongue, so she’s lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.
The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.
Hope to see you there,
Robin

Sophias is Parker UCC women's fellowship group that meets once a month. The group meets to support the church, community and most of all each other. Our 2010 goals are:
• Support the Douglas County Women’s Crisis Center
• Support our Church's Pastoral Care Team
• Support our Youth Group
• Teach Sophias to Text ;)
• Keep a Prayer Chain
• Support Each Other in All Ways Possible
We will be bringing the S.E.R.R.V. (Sales Exchange for Refugee Rehabilitation and Vocation) products for sale to the church in October or November. Plan on doing some of your Christmas shopping at that time. In addition to helping people around the world by purchasing some of their products, Parker UCC will keep 20% of what we sell.
Our next meeting will be August 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Panera Bread in Parker.

Of course we’ll kick-off our programming in style on Rally Day – September 12th with an outdoor quest for the entire group – you’re never too old to learn about the good news of God!

Who's ready to have some fun??? Well as we all prepare our fall calendars the Fellowship team has been busy planning events and is ready to announce our first Fall event!
Please join us on Sunday, September 26th, for a Community Theatre Event presentation of "Dearly Departed" at the Mainstreet Center! Community Theatre is presented by volunteer actors and is proud to present ""Dearly Departed" which takes place in the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious!" More info here: http://www.parkeronline.org/CurrentEvents.aspx?EID=659
The show starts at 2 pm and tickets are $12.00, but if we get enough interest we will be doing lunch prior to the show and that might change the price slightly!
Please email Kelly@parkerucc.org for tickets and information. Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Notes from our Music Minister

INVITATION TO SING
Music is a gift from God to help us express what is in our hearts. When we come together to worship each Sunday, we use many types of music. In the last year, we've extended our resources beyond the PUCC hymnal to include many new praise songs and songs included in hymnbooks from other denominations, displaying the words on the power point. Following the lyrics on power point is easy when you already know the melody, but can be difficult for new songs.
Several ideas have been considered to help with learning new songs. I'd like to suggest one that answers the desire to read music as well as addressing limited budget concerns. Anyone in the congregation can now access the website used by the music team to print out music.
You can then print out the sheet. If you choose, you can put together a notebook to bring with you to church. The songs can be organized in alphabetical order for quick reference during the service.
Hopefully, this will help everyone become more familiar with the new music we are now using. Most of the new songs we choose can be found in this resource. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have.
